ROYAL PRIDE WEEKLY
March 1, 2024
Hello Royals Family!
Our MCP faculty and staff enjoyed a productive Professional Development Day today, which capped off what was for our students, I’m sure, a welcomed four-day week of instruction. As a faculty community, we are in the middle of some work intended to continue building our unique campus culture. Specifically, in the area of student ‘belonging,’ what we often refer to as our feeling of ‘family’ within our entire school.
This work is both inseparable from and vital to our mission. We recognize adolescence as a time of exceptional challenge. Students at this age are emerging from their early formative years and beginning to comprehend their uniqueness (often a revelation that produces more angst than awe). These young people are simultaneously beginning to recognize that our world has more than its fair share of inequity, malevolence, and hypocrisy (further heightening anxieties). The typical reaction of adolescents to all of this is to seek comfort and safety as quickly as possible within a peer group (often any group that will have them).
It is also common as they move through adolescence (at the same time that their world becomes scarier) that students are clamoring to be released by their parents into increasing levels of autonomy. That can come in a variety of forms in every family: perhaps they are trusted to do homework without a nightly or weekly check from home; perhaps they are allowed greater social media access; perhaps their friend group expands beyond their neighborhood (or even beyond their county); perhaps they can ‘walk downtown’ with friends after school. Every family is different and achieving that balance, as a parent is among the great mysteries of child-rearing.
We, as teachers, truly love this time in a young person’s life. We choose to work in high schools because of the incredible promise that every adolescent holds. When these young people go on to exceed our expectations, it is like seeing the fingerprints of the divine manifested in this world.
Thank you, as always for your faith in us! We are in this with you, as partners. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns, and please have a wonderful weekend.
Yours in Christ,
Mike Susank
Principal

Lenten Phone Fast
As a schoolwide initiative, we want to remind all students and faculty & staff (and we invite parents too) of our school’s Lenten phone fast that begins Wednesday, February 14th. Our fasting will run from 8:30am–2:40pm each day. We do not want to see any phones out at break, at lunch, during passing periods, in the hallways, in the bathrooms, etc. We hope this is a time for all of us to better connect. Let’s embrace this beautiful opportunity to be more engaged with one another. Our Lenten phone fast will go up until Easter break. Wishing you all blessings on this Lenten journey.
