ROYAL PRIDE WEEKLY
February 23, 2024
Hello Royals Family!
We are now approaching the end of the second week of Lent. Just as Christ spent time in the desert, we too, are called during Lent to explore the dry and desolate recesses of our own spiritual universe. As you know, we took the bold step this year of adopting a school-wide initiative for Lent, with our phone fast. So far, this seems like an impactful experience. We still see the occasional cell phone, but we also are hearing our own students playfully admonishing one another that they had ‘better put away that phone…’
Honestly, it does feel like we have gained a little in terms of campus connection among our students. The Café Royale feels a little more social and the hallways are not filled with despondent faces, longing for their device. It actually feels like our students have come to some new appreciation for enduring what many thought ‘impossible’ just 10 days ago. This is anecdotal and again, we are still seeing phones on occasion. But we are sowing seeds of reflection and starting to see some of that bloom.
Please know, as a school we understand that student phone communication is sometimes truly necessary and cannot wait an hour or two. In this situation we will expect a student to present themselves in the office where we will provide an appropriately private space for this conversation. The same would hold true for a truly necessary student text conversation.
But what brought our school to this initiative is that over the past several years we have seen addiction-level behaviors around our students’ consumption of video-based social media. We have also seen phones weaponized for taunting, shaming, and threats. These are the behaviors we beginning to see our students gaining some perspective on, through this fast.
Undeniably, the cell phone is not the only device capable of feeding these addictions or delivering (and receiving) these attacks. But the cell phone is unique from other devices because of its ability to do so in isolation and in relative anonymity. We have not included student laptops and tablets in our Lenten fast because legitimate communication and healthy activities, those that a student could partake in without needing to hide the content that they are taking in or sending out, are still completely available to all students.
And just a reminder, please do take the time to complete the parent survey that was sent out in the Royal Pride several weeks ago; the link will close on Tuesday, February 27th. Thank you, as always for your faith in us! We are in this with you, as partners. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns, and please have a wonderful weekend.
Yours in Christ,
Mike Susank
Principal

Lenten Phone Fast
As a schoolwide initiative, we want to remind all students and faculty & staff (and we invite parents too) of our school’s Lenten phone fast that begins Wednesday, February 14th. Our fasting will run from 8:30am–2:40pm each day. We do not want to see any phones out at break, at lunch, during passing periods, in the hallways, in the bathrooms, etc. We hope this is a time for all of us to better connect. Let’s embrace this beautiful opportunity to be more engaged with one another. Our Lenten phone fast will go up until Easter break. Wishing you all blessings on this Lenten journey.

MCP Parent Feedback Survey
Good Afternoon Royals Family - As I reaffirmed in my Royal Pride message last week, now is the ideal moment for us to seek out feedback from our parent partners. We aspire to be a truly exemplary school, but we also realize that all schools have blind spots, areas for potential growth that are potentially known by parents and students, but not always known to school leaders.
I ask that over the next several days all MCP parents would make the commitment to investing in just a few minutes of your time, to help us become an even more exceptional school. We look forward to hearing from each of you. This survey should take less than 15 minutes to complete. Please click on the link and make that critical investment in our growth.
As always, we thank you, everyone, for your support and partnership. Survey results will be aggregated by the school and reported back to our community in the coming weeks.
Yours in Christ,
Mike Susank
