Class Descriptions Art 1Prerequisite: None.This is a one-year Art course that surveys the fundamental principles of the visual arts and design. A strong foundation in drawing will emphasize the understanding of visual elements, and explore several media. The study of basic design principles will reinforce concepts in composition and self-expression. The student will become aware of art history, exploring the way individual expression in the visual arts has been an important aspect to world cultures throughout history. Art 2Prerequisite: Art 1.Art 2 is a two-semester course that surveys advanced principles of art and design. Drawing skill is emphasized while students build their skill and understanding of line, negative and positive space, perspective, and value. Figure and portrait study will be emphasized, as well as juxtaposition of multiple subjects in one picture plane. Students will explore painting and drawing using different styles, techniques and media. Exercises in advanced color theory will help students to control and understand the use of color to emphasize focal point and unity. The study of balance and rhythm in design will reinforce the artist's control over the viewer's experience. Students will explore self-expression with the use of these visual elements and design principles. The student will become familiar with how these concepts were used in art history, exploring the way individual expression in the visual arts has been an important aspect in world cultures throughout history. Art 3Prerequisite: Art 2.Art 3 is a two-semester course for advanced art students. The class focus is the production of a portfolio that represents a broad sampling of art media and style. The class continues to surveys advanced principles of art and design, while allowing the student to create works of his/her own choosing. Students will explore painting, using different styles, techniques and media. Drawing and painting skills are emphasized, but printmaking, illustration and sculpture are also available. A series of final works will represent their pursuit of a personal style and expression unique to the artist. The student will also assist in teaching units to beginning students, and helping them in basic art skills and concepts. Digital Photography and DesignPrerequisite: Art 1 so students are familiar with the basics of composition, design principles and visual elements.This course is an overview of basic photographic techniques, digital photography, print production. Students learn the basics of camera operation including exposure, depth of field, and different focal length lenses. They apply the principles of design and composition to various forms of photography including artistic, documentary, photojournalism, studio and commercial photography. The technical skills required for commercial, architectural, and portrait photography are explored. Digital photographic techniques are employed using Adobe PhotoShop SoftwareT. Students create a portfolio of their finished prints. Web design basics are employed to create a digital portfolio of their year's work. Film MakingPrerequisite: Art 1 and Digital Photography and Design.This project-oriented class emphasizes exploration of the student filmmaker's personal creative voice through hands-on filmmaking. Students begin by making several short films, then progress to more complex productions involving more participants. Students learn the collaborative nature of the filmmaking process by working with a crew on a larger project. The process allows students to develop skills in all areas of the craft, exploring both the creative and technical aspects. Students will learn the basics of project development, storyboarding, production preparation, direction, lighting, editing and sound mixing. Students will explore both traditional narrative filmmaking and documentary. The class includes a survey of film history by studying acknowledged masterpieces, their styles, narrative strategies, genres, and approaches. Art HistoryPrerequisite: Art 1.Survey of World Art: Ancient through Modern and Contemporary Art The course is a broad survey of major achievements in painting, sculpture, architecture, and the decorative arts in Europe, the Near East, and North Africa, from prehistoric times to the present. Major art periods and epochs will be explored, so students will be familiar with the styles and influences of major artists. Emphasis will be placed on the modern art movements of Europe and the United States during the decades since the Mid-19th Century. |
