Scott Scharlach '18
“The teachers at Mission Prep have a personal touch. I feel that they are truly invested in my well-being and that they desire for all their students to thrive. The camaraderie feels as much like family as it does a classroom. My academic excellence is indebted to the understanding, compassionate and professional faculty. At MCP, I have been able to pursue excellence inside and outside the classroom.”
Scott Scharlach has a truly unique ability to embrace learning as a holistic experience which has led to many accomplishments since he has been at Mission Prep. He has received Honor Roll with Distinction for every semester, and awards including American Legion Boys’ State Award, Tri-Sport Athlete, Spanish Department Award, Math Department Award, and the Silver Medal National Spanish Exam, among others. He has also participated in service opportunities such as People’s Kitchen, Glean SLO, Love SLO and Interact Club. His community oriented mindset has resulted in successful leadership in athletics and campus activities as well. Scott is captain of the cross country team, plays soccer and is on the swim team. He is part of the Junior Statesmen of America, and Improv Club; he also represents the senior class in the student council as the Spirit Leader.
Following graduation, Scott hopes to study the sciences, majoring in physics and, eventually pursuing medicine to work with Doctors Without Borders or in zoology. Regardless of his career path, Scott’s intention is to make a positive impact on the environment and use his intellectual resources to protect Earth and its resources.
Sam Wetzel '18
“Throughout my time at Mission Prep, I have been able to inspire and be inspired by many students and faculty. The constant environment of people who care about each other is essential to this inspiration. Teachers will work with you until they have fully taught a concept, and students are always there to help academically and relationally. This care is intoxicating and pushes me to inspire others even beyond the walls of Mission Prep.”
There are many friendly students at MCP who will take time to smile and greet others in the hallways, but Sam Wetzel sets the bar. He shares his warm, energetic smile and a kind word with students and faculty on his way to class or one of his many co-curricular activities. Sam’s faith serves as the foundation for his desire to be a leader who can inspire others to be the best they can be, and he has found a way within the walls of MCP to do just that. Here on campus, Sam is ASB Vice President, is involved with the Interact Club, International Club, music ministry, Royal Ambassadors, FCA, the KAIROS leadership team, and plays on the varsity Baseball team. With a passion and talent for music, Sam also plays the guitar with the worship team at his church, writes his own songs, and is excited to reach one of his goals of recording and releasing his first album this winter.
As Sam’s senior year comes to an end, he is working toward attending Cal Poly, UCSB, Westmont or Point Loma next fall and hopes to help others improve their businesses or perhaps start a business of his own. He hopes the work he does will inspire others.
Catie Haddad '18
“The welcoming, supportive, communal environment of Mission College Prep has allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and reach my true potential. Thanks to MCP, I have been able to test my leadership capabilities and learn how to spread effective and positive change in a community.”
Before arriving at MCP as a freshman, Catie Haddad had never run for student government. She had always felt she would be a good leader, but wasn’t able to find the courage to put her thoughts into action. Throughout her time as a student, Catie has established herself as a dynamic, confident leader among her peers. She was elected this year’s ASB President, is the Captain of the Women’s Varsity Soccer team and Co-President of the Health and Medicine Club. She actively seeks out new challenges and opportunities to grow in her capacity as a leader on MCP’s campus and has learned to be aware of the feelings and opinions of those around her and to consider how her actions might affect others when she is making important decisions. Outside of school, Catie volunteers at French Hospital every weekend and is a Junior Staff Member for the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Seminar in Los Angeles.
Catie hopes to attend a university in California to major in biology, biochemistry or health sciences. After college, she wants to attend dental school to become a pediatric dentist and spend her days the best way imaginable, working with children.
