School Profile
Our Mission
Mission College Prep creates a culture of care and accountability in partnership with families to form women and men of scholarship, inspiration, and leadership in service to deeper life with God and deeper life with one another.
The School
As a Catholic college-preparatory high school for young men and women in the Diocese of Monterey, Mission College Preparatory has an enrollment of 285students in grades 9-12. It is located on the central coast of California in the city of San Luis Obispo, which is mid-way between Los Angeles and San Francisco. About half of the student body comes from three area Catholic grammar schools. The remainder of our student body comes from 21 other schools locally, regionally, and nationally.
The Faculty
The task of education at MCP is to facilitate that voyage of self-discovery for the young person such that intellectual and spiritual growth become hallmarks of their whole life. The faculty consists of 21 full-time and 3 part-time men and women, many who hold advanced degrees. The average class size is 20:1. Students are challenged and supported by caring faculty and held accountable for their performance.
Accreditation
Mission College Preparatory Catholic High School is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the Western Catholic Educational Association (WCEA). Education is addressed to formation of the whole human person and oriented to excellence in academics, athletics, the arts, and spirituality.
Leadership
At MCP participation in the life of the community is the norm and programming is a tool that facilitates the inculcation of leadership. Educating for leadership celebrates individual successes as being dependent upon the successes of every other member of the community. As a result, student leadership groups such as Associated Student Body, Student Alliance, Royal Ambassadors, Campus Ministry, and others, plan and implement all of our student activities.
Athletics
Athletics is one critical tool for developing leadership to foster responsibility in sharing the gift of intense competition and sportsmanship. We currently have 15 Varsity Teams, 13 Junior Varsity Teams, and 1 Freshmen Team. 70% of our students participated in at least 1 sport last year and 20% of our entire student body earned Scholar Athlete honors, which means they played two varsity sports and had a GPA of 3.5 or above.
Curriculum
We offer 54 college prep courses approved and certified by the University of California meeting “a-g” requirements. In addition, we offer 11 courses based in leadership, technology, physical education, health and athletic training, and Catholic Theology. Students attend 7 courses per day lasting 47 minutes per class. Community Service is a requirement for graduation.
Advanced Placement
Our AP results are an outstanding indication of our academic prowess here at MCP. Among the 196 Advanced Placement Tests taken across 8 subject areas here at MCP in May of 2009, our students passed at a highly impressive 84% rate, receiving 51 scores of ‘5’. Because we uniquely require every student in the AP class to take the test, our results demonstrate singular excellence throughout our curriculum and radically set us apart.
